Molly - a fan favourite, a respectable song and good live vocals. Where did it go wrong? Viewers alike blame the staging. Well, here's how I would have staged "Children of the Universe".
The song itself packed a real punch and, for the performance to work, the staging has to as well. Unfortunately, per the norm, the staging lacked. There was nothing gripping or mesmerizing, it was all a dull show from the BBC.
At the beginning, when Molly's backing singers sung "Power to the people", I would've brought in some pyrotechnics similar to Switzerland's - some floor fireworks. Then darkened the arena with a simple spotlight on Molly when she started her verse. As it got into the pre-chorus, I would've gradually put a spotlight on each backing singer. Through-out the verse and pre-chorus, the LED screen would be blank. I'd keep the dry-ice on the floor. Finally, when the chorus came in, put a final spotlight on the drummer and the whole arena lights up with, on the LED screen, planets and stars rocking out to the drum beat.
From here, I'd use the LED screens in the second verse and create a kind of create a warm effect - using reds, oranges and browns. On the pre-chorus, I would've just had Molly in a spotlight then do the same for chorus two as I did for chorus one. In the refrain/bridge/hook, I'd black out the hall, including Molly, and just have some glowing wristbands swaying in the arena. On the final chorus, I'd keep the golden shower and LED screens as they are currently and, on the final "Power to the people", once again have floor fireworks!
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes.
